Backroads and Barns: Scenic Drives Starting Right Outside Kootenai

If you’re stayin’ anywhere near the City of Kootenai, let me save you some frustration: skip the main drag.

Yeah, I know it’s tempting to head down Highway 95 with the rest of the herd, but truth is, the real North Idaho — the good stuff — starts where the pavement cracks, and the map thins out. You want quiet backroads, mountain views, maybe a cow or two blocking the lane? You’re in luck.

Here’s a handful of scenic drives us locals actually use when we want to clear our heads, kill a couple hours, or show off this place to visiting family without gettin’ stuck behind a rental car.

1. Selle Valley Loop

Time from Kootenai: 5 minutes
Drive time: About an hour, more if you stop for photos

Start out toward Colburn-Culver and just keep goin’. You’ll wind through Selle Valley, where the barns lean just right, the horses mind their business, and the Cabinet Mountains sneak up on you. This is where the air smells like alfalfa and you can drive with your windows down and your elbow out.

Local tip: Take this drive at sunset. Trust me.

2. Pack River Road (Upper Section)

Time from Kootenai: 10–12 minutes
Drive time: As long as you’ve got fuel and snacks

Head north past Ponderay and peel off onto Upper Pack River Road. But first, swing by the Pack River General Store — they’ve got a breakfast that’ll stop you in your tracks. Biscuits and gravy, scratch-made pastries, hot coffee — all the essentials.

Once you’re good and full, head up the gravel road. You’ll lose cell service and gain views: forested valleys, trailheads, creeks, and more than a few good fishing or picnic pullouts.

Tip: Grab an extra pastry. Trust me.

3. Dufort Road to Round Lake

Time from Kootenai: 15 minutes
Drive time: 90 minutes loop-style

Want a river road with old log houses, sawmills that ain’t running anymore, and peaceful spots to pull over and skip rocks? This is your route. Head out through Sagle, cut over toward Round Lake, and then meander along Dufort Road. It’ll eventually loop you through Laclede and back toward civilization.

Bonus points if you stop at the Laclede gas station and get a corn dog. They’re weirdly good.

4. Up to Roman Nose Lakes

Time from Kootenai: About an hour
Drive time: Half-day if you’re doing it right

Take 95 north to Naples, follow the forest road signs to Roman Nose, and just keep climbing. You’ll go from rolling hills to alpine wildflower country in about 30 minutes. Bring boots and a cooler. You’ll want to stay awhile.

Don’t go in early spring unless you like digging your rig out of snow.

5. Gold Creek to Trestle Creek

Time from Kootenai: 5 minutes
Drive time: 2–3 hours if you take it slow

Head up through Gold Creek and cut across the ridge toward Trestle Creek, winding through tall timber, old fire roads, and places that don’t see much company. Take a break up top and just listen — no traffic, no phones, just wind in the trees.

These roads are narrow and rough, so leave your Prius at home.

Look, you don’t need to be a born-and-raised North Idaho lifer to appreciate these roads. You just need an open schedule, a halfway-decent set of tires, and a willingness to pull over now and then just to take it all in.

So grab a local coffee — or better yet, a gas station coffee in a Styrofoam cup — and hit the backroads. You’ll find out quick why folks fall in love with this part of the world.

And if you get lost? That just means you’re doin’ it right.
